Buying gold vs trading gold: what is actually different?

Buying gold means owning metal: a bar, a coin, jewellery or grams recorded in a gold account. Trading gold with a broker means opening a CFD, a contract on the XAU/USD price. No metal is bought, delivered or stored, and the result is the price change between opening and closing the position, in either direction.

One does not replace the other. Physical gold is a way to store value for years. A gold CFD is a way to trade price moves over hours or days, with leverage and with the risk that comes with it. If you have never traded, a demo account shows how a gold position behaves before any money is involved.

Trading gold (XAU/USD) at TopFX — key facts

Gold trading at TopFX
InstrumentSpot gold · XAU/USD (CFD)
Spread fromXAU/USD minimum spreads on the live cTrader table, measured 2026-09-04: Growth from 0.24, Pro from 0.13, Zero from 0.04. The table lists minimums rather than averages, so the printed 0.04 on Zero is the thinnest quote the table admits, not a typical one. For scale on the same three accounts, EUR/USD reads 1.2 on Growth, 0.5 on Pro and 0.0 on Zero, and the whole Zero forex table shows a 0.0 minimum across all 40 pairs listed.
CommissionWhat TopFX publishes covers forex only: Growth and Pro are described as carrying no commission on forex, Zero as charging commission on forex. The Zero rate is not published anywhere on the current site - the site's own configuration carries commission: 0, which is a placeholder rather than a price. The only figure that ever appeared publicly is archived: a 19.05.2025 snapshot of the older RAW account listed 2.75 USD per side per lot. No separate commission schedule for metals exists in the measured sources, so on a Zero account the cost of a gold trade should be treated as unpublished, not as zero, and confirmed in the platform before trading. Account currencies are USD and EUR only - there is no MYR account, and the published deposit and withdrawal methods contain no Malaysian rails and no ringgit at all, so funding runs in USD or EUR; on the way out a processing fee ranging between 1.5% and 5% may apply depending on the payment provider and transaction details.
Max leverage1:200 on XAU/USD, labelled Flat, while most symbols on the broker's schedule run Dynamic leverage. The rest of the metals shelf is stricter: XAU/EUR 1:100, XPT/USD 1:20, XPD/USD 1:20 and XAG/USD just 1:10 Dynamic - silver carries one twentieth of the gold-in-USD figure, and gold quoted in euro carries half of it. One restriction sits on top: Terms of Business 11.23 states that every Friday between 21:00 and 24:00 server time the company has the discretionary right to set maximum leverage at 1:100 for opening a new position, so late-Friday gold entries can be margined at half the headline rate.
Contract sizeThe account specification published for Growth, Zero and Pro alike gives 1 lot = 100,000 units, with a ceiling of 100 standard lots per position. A separate XAU/USD contract size does not appear in the published account specifications, so that 100,000-unit line is an account-level figure and not a gold-specific one. Before sizing a gold position, read the exact unit value of one XAU/USD lot from the contract specification inside cTrader, MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 rather than assuming it matches the forex line.
Minimum trade0.01 lots, in increments of 0.01, identical on Growth, Zero and Pro; the maximum is 100 standard lots per position. Account level minimum deposit is 0, so the entry barrier is set by the funding method rather than by the account: 50 EUR or equivalent on Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Skrill and Neteller, 100 EUR on SEPA and 100 USD on SWIFT, while a bank transfer under 100 EUR/USD is returned.
DirectionGold here is a CFD on the XAU/USD price, so a position can be opened in either direction, long or short, with no metal delivered or stored. Two mechanics constrain how a position is run. First, TopFX states a minimum interval of 300 seconds - five minutes - between opening and closing a trade, which rules out fast in-and-out scalping on gold news. Second, the broker's own close-out numbers disagree with each other: the account pages give Margin Call 50% and Stop Out 20%, while Terms of Business 11.24 says positions may begin to be closed at a margin level of 60% or below, with automatic close-out at 35% on MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 and at 30% on cTrader. That gap is the broker's, not a typo here, and it should be settled with support before leverage is pushed. Negative balance protection is stated - losses are capped at the amount the client has deposited - and clause 17.4 applies it per client rather than per account. Clients in Malaysia are served under TopFX Markets Limited, BVI company no. 2116078, FSC BVI licence SIBA/L/23/1161 as stated by the broker (this site has not verified it in the BVI FSC register), while onboarding and payments run through TopFX Global Ltd, Seychelles; the broker discloses that 85.19% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider.
PlatformscTrader - Windows desktop, web terminal at ct.topfx.com, iOS and Android, plus cTrader Copy, cTrader Automate and FIX API. MetaTrader 4 - desktop and iOS/Android; servers named TopFXGlobal-Demo Server and TopFXGlobal-Live Server. MetaTrader 5 - iOS and Android, server TopFX-Live; offered with all three account types, though the instrument availability table names only MetaTrader 4 and cTrader for metals and the demo block names only cTrader and MetaTrader 4, so MT5 access to gold is worth confirming with support. No in-house terminal exists - gold is traded on these third-party platforms only, and unlike Shares, ETFs, Crypto CFDs and the 8 Synthetic Indices, which are cTrader-only, metals are not locked to one platform.
Minimum depositNo account-level minimum; funding starts at 50 EUR by card or e-wallet, 100 USD by SWIFT
Overnight swapA gold position carried past rollover is subject to swap, and no XAU/USD swap rate appears in the published materials reviewed here - the number has to be read from the symbol specification inside the platform before a position is held overnight. A swap-free option exists: the account specification carries islamicAccount true, it is requested by e-mail form to the broker's support with proof of religion, and the stated coverage is Forex, Energies, Metals, Indices and Shares - metals, and therefore gold, are inside that list - with no spread widening in exchange. The limitation is contractual: Terms of Business 10.7 leaves swap-free status to the company's discretion, so it is granted on request rather than owed. Unrelated to swaps but relevant to a long hold, clause 11.26 charges 5 USD, EUR, GBP or CHF, or 600 JPY, per month once an account passes 90 calendar days without trading activity.
Trading hoursGold does not run around the clock. The per-symbol schedule opens XAU/USD at 01:01:00 and closes it at 23:57:00 server time, and the server clock is EET, UTC+2 in winter and EEST UTC+3 in summer. Malaysia runs on MYT, UTC+8, so in winter the gold week opens 07:01 Monday MYT and ends 05:57 Saturday MYT; in summer, with the server on EEST, that shifts to 06:01 Monday MYT and 04:57 Saturday MYT. Gold therefore starts one hour after the forex week, which runs 00:01 EET Monday to 23:59 EET Friday - 06:01 Monday MYT in winter - and stops two minutes before it. Only crypto and synthetic index CFDs trade 24/7; a weekend gap in gold cannot be traded until the Monday open, which for a trader in Malaysia lands on Monday morning rather than Sunday evening. Measured on the platform on 17 September 2026: asked for its trading sessions, a TopFX demo account returned XAU/USD as 22:01 to 20:59 UTC on each of the five weekdays - 06:01 Monday to 04:59 Saturday MYT while the server clock runs EEST - and flagged the symbol as not always open. That is the same 01:01 open the published schedule gives, with a close two minutes later than the 23:57 printed there, and the platform answers in UTC rather than server time, so the conversion to MYT needs no guess about which half of the year the server is in. EUR/USD on the same account came back as 21:00 to 21:00 UTC across five sessions a week, which is 05:00 Monday to 05:00 Saturday MYT in summer - an hour earlier than the winter figure above.
